How Many Gunas Are Needed for Marriage?

Where the number comes from

Ashtakoota matching compares eight factors and awards a fixed number of points to each, thirty-six in total. Eighteen — half — became the conventional threshold for an acceptable match.

It is a convention, not a rule from the texts. There is no classical source that declares seventeen unmarriageable and eighteen acceptable.

The points are not evenly spread

This is the part that changes how you should read a total. The eight kootas are worth very different amounts, and two of them carry nearly half the score between them.

Which is why the total can mislead

Bhakoot and Nadi together are fifteen of the thirty-six. A single mismatch in either can drag an otherwise excellent match below the famous eighteen — while a couple scoring twenty could have low marks scattered across the factors that matter more to them.

Both of those large kootas also have widely accepted cancellations: Nadi dosha is often cancelled when both partners share a Moon sign, and Bhakoot when the Moon-sign lords are friendly. Whether a site applies those cancellations changes the total dramatically, which is why scores differ between websites.

What a score is genuinely good for

A guna total is a fast, cheap first pass over eight specific compatibility factors, computed almost entirely from where each Moon sat. It knows nothing about the seventh house, its lord, Venus, Jupiter, or which dashas either person is running — all of which a competent astrologer weighs before saying anything about a marriage.

Read the breakdown, not the number. Which kootas are low, and do those particular factors matter to these two people? That question is worth asking. “Is it above eighteen?” mostly is not.
