What gun milan actually measures
Ashtakoota compares eight things — varna, vashya, tara, yoni, graha maitri, gana, bhakoot and nadi — and gives each a fixed number of points, thirty-six in total. Almost all of it is computed from where the Moon sat in each chart: its sign, and its nakshatra.
That is why it takes seconds and why every site gives the same answer. It is a table lookup, not a judgement. The interesting question is never the total — it is which of the eight are low, and whether those eight matter for these two people.
What the number cannot tell you
Eighteen out of thirty-six is the figure usually quoted as a threshold, and it deserves less authority than it gets. Two of the eight kootas — bhakoot and nadi — carry fifteen points between them, so a single mismatch there can drag an otherwise strong match under the line.
A competent astrologer reads gun milan alongside the seventh house, its lord, Venus, Jupiter and the dashas both people are running. We give you the arithmetic in full because it is yours; we would not want anyone treating it as the answer on its own.
About Manglik
Manglik dosha is Mars sitting in particular houses counted from the ascendant — most schools count the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th, some include the 2nd. It is the single most feared word in this subject, and the one most often applied without checking whether the classical cancellations apply.
Because it depends on houses, it depends completely on the birth time. If either time is unknown we report that we could not judge it, rather than reporting “not Manglik” — a reassurance nobody should take from a chart calculated for noon.
Common questions
How many gunas are needed for a match?
Eighteen out of thirty-six is the number usually quoted, and it is a convention rather than a rule. Which kootas are low matters more than the total, and no serious astrologer decides on the number alone.
Why do different websites give different scores?
Mostly because schools differ on two cancellations — whether nadi dosha is cancelled when both share a Moon sign, and whether bhakoot is cancelled when the sign lords are friends. We apply both, and the result says which switches were used.
What if one birth time is unknown?
You still get the guna score, because the kootas rest on the Moon rather than on houses. Manglik is left unjudged, because it cannot be known without the time.
Is a low score a reason not to marry?
No, and we would not want this page used that way. It compares eight specific factors and knows nothing else about either chart or either person. Take a low score as a question worth asking an astrologer, not an answer.
Do you store our birth details?
No. Both births are used to calculate the score and then discarded. They stay in this browser tab so you can come back to them, and are gone when you close it.
