The Twelve Houses, and What Each One Covers

A house is a department of life

A chart is a picture of the sky divided into twelve sections, and each section is read for a particular area of living. Signs describe how a planet behaves; houses describe where in your life it acts. A well-placed planet in the wrong house for what you are asking about tells you very little.

The houses are counted from the ascendant, which is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. That is the whole reason a birth time matters: the ascendant moves through all twelve signs in a day, so being two hours out reshuffles every house in the chart while leaving the planets almost exactly where they were.

What each house covers

The list below is the classical scope of each house, kept short deliberately. Every house has more attributed to it than this, but these are the meanings that carry most of the weight in an actual reading.

• 1st — the self: body, temperament, vitality, how you meet the world
• 2nd — accumulated wealth, family, speech and what you hold
• 3rd — courage, initiative, siblings and short journeys
• 4th — home, mother, land, vehicles and early schooling
• 5th — intelligence, children, creativity and merit carried forward
• 6th — service, daily work, debt, enemies and health
• 7th — spouse, partnership, contracts and dealing with the public
• 8th — upheaval, longevity, inheritance and what is hidden
• 9th — fortune, father, higher learning, teachers and long journeys
• 10th — action, profession and public standing
• 11th — gains, income, networks and the fulfilment of desires
• 12th — foreign lands, retreat, expenditure and what lies beyond the familiar

Some houses are treated as stronger than others

Classical practice groups them. The kendras — 1, 4, 7 and 10 — are the pillars of a chart, and planets there act with force. The trikonas — 1, 5 and 9 — carry fortune, and their lords are the most benefic planets in any chart. When a kendra lord and a trikona lord connect, that link is the basis of most of the well-known yogas.

The dusthanas — 6, 8 and 12 — are the difficult ones: debt, upheaval and expenditure. They are not disasters. They describe the friction any life contains, and a chart with nothing in them is not a chart with no trouble in it.

How to actually use this

Pick the question first, then the house. Money is the 2nd and 11th. Marriage is the 7th. Career is the 10th. Then look at three things in order: which sign sits on that house, what is placed in it, and — most important, and most often skipped — where the lord of that house has gone.

That last step is where beginners lose the thread and where most of the actual reading lives. A strong 10th house whose lord is buried in the 12th says something quite different from a strong 10th whose lord sits in the 11th. Draw your own chart above and try it on a house you care about.
