Vimshottari Dasha: Which Period You Are In

A 120-year cycle

Vimshottari is the most widely used dasha system in Indian astrology. It allots each of nine grahas a fixed number of years, adding up to 120 — a symbolic full life.

Where your sequence starts

The order is always the same, but where you enter it is not. Your starting point is set by the nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth, and how far through that nakshatra it had travelled decides how much of the first period was already spent before you were born.

This is why two people born on the same day in the same city can be running entirely different periods — the Moon moves about one nakshatra per day, and the balance at birth depends on the exact position within it.

Periods inside periods

Each mahadasha subdivides into antardashas belonging to the same nine grahas, in the same order and in the same proportions. A nineteen-year Saturn mahadasha contains a Saturn–Saturn period, a Saturn–Mercury period, and so on.

That nesting is how the system produces timing finer than “a nineteen-year chapter”, and it goes further still — antardashas subdivide again into pratyantardashas.

What it does and does not say

A dasha tells you which graha is currently emphasised. What that emphasis produces depends entirely on how that graha sits in your particular chart — a well-placed Saturn period and a badly-placed one are not the same experience, and no honest reading treats them as interchangeable.

It is a framework for timing, not a schedule of events. Anyone offering you a calendar of things that will happen has left the tradition behind somewhere.
