What a Chart Says About Running a Business

Business is read from the seventh, not the tenth

This surprises people who assume the career house covers everything. The 10th house is action and standing — it describes work of any kind. The 7th is where dealing with others sits: partnership, contracts, trade, and the public you sell to.

A chart with a strong 10th and a weak 7th describes someone who works well and negotiates badly, which is a recognisable and expensive combination. The relationship between those two houses is where the question actually gets answered.

The partnership question, which is the real one

Most business failures people bring to an astrologer are partnership failures. The 7th house and its lord are read for how you fare in shared undertakings — whether you are better placed alone, and what tends to go wrong when you are not.

It is worth saying plainly what this is: a description of temperament and pattern. It is not a character reference for a specific partner, and it is certainly not a substitute for a written agreement. Compatibility between two business partners is not a thing the classical texts address at all — that method exists for marriage.

Timing an expansion

Where the tradition is genuinely useful is timing. A dasha of a planet connected to the 7th, 10th or 11th is when it would expect enterprise to find traction, and the transits of Jupiter and Saturn over those houses are read as the supporting weather.

That gives you periods when the tradition considers effort more likely to be repaid. It does not tell you whether to sign a lease. Anyone who reads a chart and tells you a venture will succeed has assumed knowledge of a market that no chart contains.

It is for the questions that are about you: whether you are built to work alone or with others, whether your chart favours patient building or fast starts, and which periods support a change of direction.

It is not diligence, and it is not a business plan. Treat it the way you would treat an honest assessment of your own temperament from someone who knows you — useful input to a decision you still have to make on the numbers.
