A chart is far better at describing how you work than at naming what you do.
The tenth house, and what sits behind it
The tenth house — karma bhava — is the house of action and public standing, and every career reading starts there. Its sign, whatever occupies it, and the placement of its lord give the first shape of an answer.
Two other houses are read alongside it: the sixth, which covers service and the daily grind of work, and the eleventh, which covers gains. A chart strong in the tenth but weak in the eleventh describes something quite different from the reverse — recognition without accumulation, roughly, against quiet earning without a public name.
The D10 is where the detail lives
The Dashamsha divides each sign into ten parts and builds a separate chart, read specifically for profession. Classical practice treats the main chart as the broad indication and the D10 as the detail — which of several possible directions actually carries weight, and where the strength behind a career sits.
Because it is a tenfold division it moves ten times as fast against the birth time as the main chart does. A career reading from an approximate time is a much weaker thing than one from an exact time, and you deserve to be told which one you are getting.
Planets as professions, carefully
The tradition associates each graha with fields of work. Mercury with writing, trade, analysis and speech; Mars with engineering, surgery, land and the armed forces; Venus with art, beauty and luxury; Saturn with labour, structure and long endurance; Jupiter with teaching, law and counsel.
These are indications of temperament, not job titles. The same Mercury that suggests writing suggests accountancy, and which of them a life becomes depends on a great deal that no chart contains — where you were born, what you were taught, what was available to you. Any reading that names one job and stops has skipped that step.
Business or job
This is the specific question most people actually arrive with. Classical practice reads it from the relative strength of the tenth house and its lord against the seventh — partnership and dealing with the public — and from whether the chart favours independent action or structured service.
It is a real distinction in the tradition and a useful one. It is still an indication. A chart can suggest which suits your temperament and which periods favour a change; it cannot tell you whether this particular business, in this particular market, will work.
